Time: 3 – 4 pm EST

Ever wonder how to increase spontaneous mands and tacts in children with autism? We got you covered in this Journal Club! Join Victoria Verdun, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LBA, Clinical Director, as we review research that extended the Speaker Immersion Protocol (SIP) by incorporating recruitment for social attention. Speaker Immersion involved structured opportunities to engage either attentive communication partners, diverted within proximity, or diverted outside the immediate area. Results demonstrate increased frequency and quality of spontaneous verbal requests. Participants more consistently initiated bids for attention in contexts where the listener’s attention was not immediately available. This CEU will review the findings that suggest that SIP with social recruitment can improve both the quantity and social appropriateness of communication in children with ASD. We will also discuss ideas on how the SIP can be incorporated into practice with the author of this article.

What you will learn

  • State the Basics of Speaker Immersion Protocol (SIP)
