Active Engagement and Social Communication: A Leadership Lens

Tuesday, December 1, 2026 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. EST
1 Supervision CEU
Cost: Free
Presenter: Megan DeLeon Miller, PhD, BCBA-D, IBA, Founder, Do Better Collective

What This Session Covers

Active engagement and social communication are foundational to meaningful learning, but they are easy to overlook when clinical teams are focused primarily on task completion, responding, or skill acquisition. This session reframes the question for supervisors: not just whether a learner is responding, but whether they are truly engaged.

Dr. DeLeon Miller introduces research-informed indicators of active engagement and social communication, including subtle and nonverbal forms of noticing, seeking, sharing, and reciprocating. Participants will practice recognizing these moments through video examples and explore how leaders can coach their teams to support more responsive, individualized interactions using a CORE-informed observational lens.

What You’ll Learn

  • Key indicators of active engagement and social communication during early intervention interactions
  • How to differentiate meaningful engagement from participation that is primarily adult-directed or prompt-dependent
  • How to recognize a full range of communicative behaviors, including subtle and nonverbal forms
  • How to use a CORE-informed lens to observe interactions and coach clinicians toward more responsive support

This session is designed for BCBAs and clinical leaders at any experience level who want a sharper eye for what genuine engagement looks like in practice.

We look forward to seeing you on December 1.
